Behind the Dream: The Making of Rono’s "Gulaabi Rahi" Music Video

With the release of the music video for "Gulaabi Rahi," Rono, alongside KAQI Entertainment and Moshh Motion Mediaworks, brings a surreal visual experience that captures the essence of nostalgic romance and vibrant 90s aesthetics.

The Concept and Setting

"Gulaabi Rahi" is a visually captivating piece that tells the story of love’s distant ache and faded dreams through the eyes of a young girl, portrayed by Aarifah, who also features on the track. The video opens with Aarifah listening to the song on her walkman in a dreamy, retro setting. She finds herself in a space decorated with iconic vintage items—a landline phone, a typewriter, a model ship, a spotlight—that all evoke a 90s aesthetic. This nostalgic ambiance is enhanced by a vibrant floral backdrop that adds warmth, inviting viewers to step into her world.
As she immerses herself in the song, her imagination takes flight. Through dreamlike flashes, we catch glimpses of the band performing, playing and singing along to the rhythm she hears. Suddenly, her daydream becomes reality as the floral backdrop parts, revealing the band live behind her. This striking transition bridges the gap between dream and reality, mirroring the song’s theme of longing for something seemingly out of reach but cherished deeply.

Styling and Art Direction

The visual artistry of "Gulaabi Rahi" owes much to the meticulous set design, styling, and art direction. Director Taab envisioned the video’s nostalgic, dreamy quality and brought it to life through a vibrant, vintage-inspired palette. Shot at Studio Ash, the set design was enhanced with carefully chosen elements that symbolize the character’s inner world.
Stylist Mohnish Panjabi crafted looks that blend modern fashion with retro flair, reinforcing the theme of love through rose-tinted glasses. The costumes and aesthetics beautifully accentuate the unique vibe of the 90s-inspired decor and amplify the video’s nostalgic yet vivid feel.

The Music and Collaboration

"Gulaabi Rahi," composed by Rono, lyrically delves into the bittersweet nature of love. The title, "Gulaabi," alludes to a rose-tinted view, with love in its raw, unbalanced form. The song’s rich blend of indie and alternative 80s influences is brought to life through rock drums, swirling guitars, and vintage synths, adding a sense of urgency to its emotional landscape. Collaborating with Aarifah, who lends her vocal talent to the track, was essential to capturing the delicate yet intense energy of the song.

The Team Behind the Vision

Creating this music video was truly a collaborative effort, led by Taab’s visionary direction and supported by a dedicated team who contributed to every detail. The project brought together the artistry of Moshh Motion Mediaworks, the expertise of Studio Ash, and the seamless production coordination of KAQI Entertainment.
